How to get an HST number in Canada
What an HST/GST number is, when your business needs one, how to register with the CRA, and what changes once you’re registered.

An HST number (a GST/HST account under your Business Number) lets you charge and remit HST. Here’s how to get one.
Do you need one?
You need to register once you pass $30,000 in revenue over four consecutive quarters. Below that you’re a “small supplier” and registration is optional — but registering lets you claim back the HST you pay on business purchases.
How to register
- Register through CRA’s Business Registration Online, by phone, or by mail.
- You’ll get a GST/HST account number tied to your Business Number.
- Registration usually takes effect from the date you request (or the day you exceeded the threshold).
After you register
You start charging 13% HST on taxable sales in Ontario, filing returns for your assigned period, and claiming input tax credits. It’s worth setting your books up correctly from day one so the first filing isn’t painful.
This is general information, not tax advice. Rules and thresholds change and depend on your situation — your accountant makes the final call.
